behind gnitter.
My name is Shayla. I am the creator of the brand Gnitter. The name came about once I finally learned how to knit after admiring the drape styles knitting created. I had also gotten used to people mistaking my crocheting for knitting as they watched me from wherever, which further motivated me to enhance my skillset + broaden my realm of creativity. Initially, I wanted to spell the word with the traditional ‘K’, but Gnitter with a ‘G’ gave the word such a rock appeal. The G made the word look more refined and more character-filled. I fell in love with the name, and feel it perfectly embodies every piece I create — starting off as one thing, then turning into something much more lovely with the slightest of tweaks. Like the changing of one letter.
I was introduced to the art of crocheting in 2009. My interest was piqued one summer day when I walked in on a large collection of yarn skeins sprawled across my Mema’s bed. She took notice of my curiosity, handed me a skein of purple yarn, and showed me how to work the hook. Years later [9 to be exact], when I needed it the most, that purple skein turned into the first garment ever created by these hands. The sensation I felt afterwards was so overwhelming, I could do nothing but admire what I’d birthed. I wanted to live in that feeling, so I kept that going.
